This subseries consists of an inventory of the Adams house on Massachusetts Avenue in Washington, D.C., compiled by Hermes Haywood.

This subseries contains the various writings and collected research of Charles Francis Adams II, including a typescript of his autobiography, drafts of his biography of his father Charles Francis Adams (1807-1886), and research materials related to the biography. Historical materials include correspondence and extracts of newspapers from the Civil War.

Boxes 1-34 primarily consist of incoming correspondence. Subjects discussed include: family matters in correspondence with Brooks Adams, Henry Adams, John Quincy Adams (1833-1894), Mary Ogden Adams, and Mary Adams Quincy; Harvard University concerns in correspondence with Charles W. Eliot, A. Lawrence Lowell, Charles Eliot Norton, William Roscoe Thayer, and Barrett Wendell; the Massachusetts Historical Society's activities in correspondence with Worthington C. Ford and Robert C. Winthrop, Jr.; other historical questions, particularly concerning the Civil War and the American Revolution, in correspondence with James Bryce, William E. Dodd, Albert Bushnell Hart, J. Franklin Jameson, John Bassett Moore, James Ford Rhodes, and George Otto Trevelyan; political and economic matters in correspondence with Joseph Chamberlain, Marcus A. Hanna, George Frisbie Hoar, Henry Cabot Lodge, Samuel Walker McCall, Whitelaw Reid, Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, David Ames Wells, James Harrison Wilson, and Woodrow Wilson; and anti-imperialism and American atrocities in the Philippines in correspondence with George S. Boutwell, Andrew Carnegie, Carl Schurz, Moorfield Storey, H. Parker Willis, and Erving Winslow. This subseries also contains significant letters to and from W.E.B. DuBois, Kelly Miller, and Booker T. Washington that illustrate turn-of-the-century attitudes toward race. Other important Adams correspondents include: John Jay Chapman, E.L. Godkin, Edward Everett Hale, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., Robert Todd Lincoln, Alfred Thayer Mahan, John S. Mosby, Walter Hines Page, Leslie Stephen, and Owen Wister.

Box 35 consists of three small collections of handwritten and typewritten correspondence from Charles Francis Adams II to his wife Mary Ogden Adams from Cuba, Jamaica, and France, 1890-1896; to his brother John Quincy Adams from Cuba, 1890; and to Theodore F. Dwight, 1888-1891. Box 36 contains typescripts of letters to Moorfield Storey, an Adams letter to the Lincoln Board of Selectmen on the question of taxation, and papers relating to the Massachusetts Historical Society's memorial service for Adams.

This subseries contains lectures on historical subjects given by Adams at Johns Hopkins University. The fifth lecture of the series is missing from the collection.

This subseries contains miscellaneous flyers, pamphlets, speeches, etc.

This subseries contains miscellaneous letters of Charles Francis Adams II, 1865-1913, as well as some papers of his son Charles Francis Adams III (1866-1954), including correspondence and newspaper clippings.

This subseries contains drafts, revisions, and notes for Adams's biography of his father Charles Francis Adams (1807-1886).
